I custom built my own Theremin that looks like a Tardis. I 3D printed all the parts for the case after drawing them up in Fusion360 based on measurements from one of the Tadis models from the show and scaled down. The electronics are based on an open source project called the Open Theremin. This is the Open Theremin version 3. Check them out here: https://www.gaudi.ch/OpenTheremin/index.php

I used their Gerber files to order my own PCB’s (so I could have them in blue) and sourced all the parts and assembled myself. The Open Theremin is basically an Arduino shield with some oscillators and stuff happening and the Arduino acts like a fancy controller to control the analog oscillators that make the sound. The antennas were purchased from gaudi.cch/opentheremin and I stuck with gold for all the trim features to match them.

The light on top of the Tardis is a button that toggles the sound on and off. Blue light means it is on and ready to play, Orange means its in calibration mode. The police phone box decals on the sides were just printed onto label paper, cut out and stuck on.

I absolutely love the way this project came out. As a fan of Doctor Who and a lover of musical instruments, this project really ticked my boxes.

Other Electronics Projects

Yet another hobby I enjoy is electronics. When I was a teenager I got into electronics by building headphone amplifiers. I found that a really fun way to make something that I could spend a lot of time using. I built many amps from portable battery powered amps to larger desktop units I used with my computer for a long time. Eventually I built a full size power amp which I am still making use of after almost 20 years.
